Data Analyst

Co-founded in 2007 by one of the leading commentators on the management consultant industry, Source has
since become a leading provider of research, data, and strategic advice about the global management
consulting industry, headquartered in London.

Underpinned by the biggest and most sophisticated data model of the consulting industry ever created, our
work helps consulting firms to navigate the ever-changing market place and accelerate their growth plans.
Our customers include all of the world’s biggest 20 consulting firms; we provide them with the intelligence
they need to make better decisions.

Our team and culture

The Source team is made up of around 35 bright and hard-working individuals, many of whom started their
careers in large consulting firms before joining Source to continue doing challenging analytical and
strategic thinking, for consulting firms themselves, in a more diverse and flexible environment. We travel
frequently to major business centres like New York, Frankfurt, Paris and Dubai – but rarely to an extent
that’s overwhelming.

Our culture is one of the cornerstones of our success: It’s a relaxed, fun, but hard-working company, where
everybody has a voice and is encouraged to share their ideas about how we grow.

Every year, those who have worked with the company for the longest time get to nominate a destination for
one of our quarterly meetings, and then everybody gets to vote on where we go. So far that’s taken us to
Istanbul, Seville, Dubrovnik and Corfu. This year we’ll be going to the Loire Valley, in France.

About the opportunity

These are the sort of things you’ll be expected to do:

  • Data management: We need someone who can take a lot of unstructured data from multiple sources and turn
it into clear and accurate information that can be used by other analysts who are looking for the stories
it has hidden within it. We need someone who takes responsibility for the quality of the data we own, and
looks for ways to improve it.
  • Data preparation: We need you to be able to support analysts who are working on bespoke projects
(consulting projects, basically), providing them with data, in a variety of forms, for those projects.
Data proofing: We will also ask you to proof the data in our reports before they get published.
These are the skills we need you to have:

Excel: We need you to be a highly-proficient user of Excel, preferably with svome programming knowledge
(VBA to help us running macros on big spreadsheets, SQL to link up with other systems, etc.) You probably
need to love Excel.

Data visualisation: Good data visualisation provides clarity. Great data visualisation tells a story. We
need someone who can do both and knows when to choose the right method. The ability to create crisp charts
in PowerPoint is just as important to us as familiarity with software such as Tableau (for example).

Statistical capabilities: We need you to be highly numerate and statistically literate, with a background
in a statistical discipline. We’d like you to be able to perform cross-tabulation and linear regression
analysis in your sleep. Proficiency in another statistical package (e.g. R) is desirable. Ideally, you also
have experience analysing survey data.

This is the sort of person we need:

We need someone who loves data, and loves analysing it, but whose interest also extends to the way data is
communicated to people (through charts, infographics, etc.) and can imagine new and exciting ways to do
that. Being organised and methodical is critical, because errors can have a significant impact on the
integrity and quality of the information we provide to our customers. Basically we need someone who is
resilient enough to wade through a swamp of data and emerge with information that is accurate, consistent,
and above all else, interesting. Source is a fast-moving company so you will need to be pro-active in
learning new skills and keep up-to-date on the latest developments in the data world.

In addition to this, we want our organisation to consist of people who:

  • Are always professional
  • Take the wheel when needed
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Can always be objective and honest
  • Keep an eye on the future
  • Are generous with their time in order to help each other (and our customers) succeed
  • Have a sense of fairness
  • Trust each other
  • Ask, listen and hear
  • Are approachable
  • Are curious, and who want to learn
  • Are constantly looking for ways to improve things (products and processes)
  • Develop products we can be proud of
  • Have an intuitive sense of what’s important
  • Demonstrate leadership by example
  • Laugh a lot
